King - supreme dictator. The Crown is passed down from father to eldest son on most occasions. The king is the ruler of the country. His word is law. Period. However, he must answer to his nobles or there will be civil war.
Noble Council - primarily made up of important nobles, such as Dukes and Lords of large fiefdoms. This group can overthrow the king and place a new ruler on the thrown, but this has only been done once after fifty years worth of war. Only men or widowed women can serve on the council.
King's Own - the only full time soldiers of the realm. The Own is comprised of 301 men: 3 companies of 100 men and the commander.
Espionage - the royal spies are made up of any adult with a knack for being sneaky. The Royal Spy Master is almost always a noble and usually forced to live within the palace, for the King's confidence.
Knights - all knights go through at least 8 years of rigorous training, starting when they are twelve years old as a page and then a squire. Knights are required to swear fealty to the crown before taking their shield.
Squire - squire is the second stage of knight training. A squire is usually chosen by a knight to accompany him or her for four years to continue their training. A knight-to-be is a squire for at least four years. If a squire is not with a roaming Knight, he is required to live in the palace.
Page - the first stage of knight training. Pages begin at the earliest when twelve years old. All pages must be able to prove their heritage in one of the two Books. They tend to be second sons, for first sons go on to inherit their father's estates, though it is extremely smiled upon for all noble born men to at least try for knighthood. Girls can apply to be a page, but very few make it through the rigorous program to earn their shields. Pages are required to live in the palace.
SERVICE TO THE COURT
King of Thieves - also known as the Rogue. This rank is the most difficult to describe. There is a separate King of Thieves in most cities, however, all of them are forced to answer to the Dænr Rogue, though they rarely cross paths. The Thief King holds the allegiance of the city's lowest class, an allegiance that is hard won. The only way for a new Thief King to take the throne is for him to kill the old one in one on one combat. The rogue tithes the lowest class a small fee, usually completely payable, and gives them protection from Crown Law in return. He is always a commoner; the people would not tolerate a noble in the position. It is very rare for the Rogue to be arrested, no matter his crimes, as it would result in riots all across the city. It is commonplace for nobles to bring the Rogue a bribe in order to protect their valuable belongings.
Queen of Thieves - she very rarely has any emotional or physical attachment to the Rogue, and is usually his family. She is the leader of the city's flower sellers, or, as the very rude name her, the head whore.
Deputy - usually the Rogue's best friend. This person is possibly one of the only people the Rogue trusts, and is therefor one of the few that can become the next Rogue. That is rarely done, however, because the Deputy and the Rogue are almost always extremely close friends.
Cutthroat - Rogue bodyguards. They are paid a hefty price for their services and the promise to not turn on the Rogue himself. Name was coined twenty years ago after the man Martes "Cutthroat" Farmer killed the Rogue and took the throne.
City Rat - average person who steals to make or help make a living. Many of these are not adults yet, as it is not uncommon for adults to kick their children out on the street when times are tough.
GENERAL OTHER
Blacksmith - one who works with metal, creating anything from utensils to swords.
Tanner - one who works with leather.
Seamstress - one who sews.
Hostler - one who works with horses.
Man-at-Arms - common soldier. Owes allegiance to whoever pays him.
